Residents of Zone 6 Police Signpost, Lugbe in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, on Monday, embarked on a peaceful protest over a prolonged electricity blackout that has lasted for four months in the area.
The organised peaceful protest and registering of grievances was carried by the Police Signpost, Lugbe residents against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
According to the residents, their situation is made worse because of the fact that other zones within the Lugbe community have a stable power supply, while their own case is otherwise since they have been in perpetual darkness for four months.
Tribune Online spoke to Mr Ikyume Shaha who is a welder and fabricator, according to him “The electricity situation in this our area is not favourable to the growth of my kind of business, with fuel not cheap, we are still forced to use fuel because there is no light here for a long time, AEDC need to come to our rescue.”
Ms Ngozi who is a business lady with an interest in drinks told Tribune Online that “because of lack of electricity supply, we use a generator or buy ice block so that our drinks will be cold to satisfy our customers, we are spending more than we should if we had electricity power supply here.”
Efforts to get across to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) proved unsuccessful but elsewhere News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the General Manager, Corporate Communications of AEDC as saying “the transformer along with other required units are yet to be replaced, but all these are being looked into and as soon as all the materials are gathered, the light will be restored to the area.”
The Police Public Relations Officer of FCT Police Command did not respond to messages to her to know if the Command was aware of the protest.
