Proprietress of burnt Edo orphanage appeals for help

THE proprietress of Amadin Orphanage, Benin- City, Mrs. Lucy Bello, has a made a passionate appeal to well-meaning Nigerians for support in rehabilitating the centre, which was completely razed down on the night of April 8.

Mrs. Bello,who spoke in Benin, said that valuables worth millions of naira were lost to the fire incident.

The proprietress listed some of the valuables that were consumed in the inferno to include beddings, three desktop computers, four laptops, four printers, four digital cameras, six sewing machines and valuable documents.

Bello said, however, that the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, noting that no life was lost in the incident, as a result of the timely intervention of neighbours who rushed in to help quell the raging fire.

She noted that 22 inmates were occupying the upper apartment of the storey building while the upstairs was used as the medical centre for the inmates.

Bello said that the 22 inmates had since been merged with the other 34 inmates at the permanent site containing 15 rooms.

She disclosed that the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Magdalene Ohenhen and Mr. Lukman Salami, Senior Special Assistant to Governor  Godwin Obasekion State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), had visited the home to ascertain the level of damage.

According to her, Salami had, during the visit, assured  that contingency plan was on ground to prevent such occurrences.
