Profiling, stereotyping are threats to peace in Kaduna ―Commission

The Kaduna State Peace Commission has identified profiling and stereotyping as major threats to peace in Kaduna state. 

Speaking on the activities of the commission and the state of peaceful coexistence in Kaduna on Tuesday, the chairman of the commission, Most Rev Josiah Idowu Fearon noted that while there are significant progress in some parts of the state, in other local government areas criminals activities are still striving. 

‘Iam highly pleased to note the significant progress that has been made in de-escalating the drivers of violence in all parts of the state. Happily, our major cities of Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan have not witnessed violent conflict throughout the year. 

However, he noted that, ‘criminal activities like kidnapping of persons for ransom, armed robbery, rustling of cattle and raiding of villages for motives have posed a tremendous challenge. 

According to him, even though these incidences are criminal in nature,’ they have strained inter-community relations especially in parts of Birnin Gwari, Igabi, Giwa, Chikun, Kajuru, Zango Kataf and Jema’a local government areas arising out of profiling and stereotyping of one group or the other. 

Fearon called on people of the state to work with the security agencies to help in reversing the trend of these criminal activities. 

He also appealed to leaders at all levels to help in creating the right awareness that  criminality has no ethnicity, religion or place of origin saying, we all need to cooperate with to end this ugly development in our state and nation. 

While appreciating the state government for its support, he also commended the United States Institute of Peace, Government of Norway, the United Nations Development Programme, Mercy Corps, CLEEN Foundation and Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in supporting the commission. 

To this end, Fearon maintained that collectively we can achieve peace, saying, collectively we will reverse the narratives that promote violence and build consensus irrespective of the differences among us.
