A former Minister of Education and Nigeria’s former ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Professor Tunde Adeniran, has donated his entire personal library to the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Adeniran, who is a professor of political science, handed over the collection of books to the institution at a ceremony held at the ABUAD campus in Ado Ekiti, where he announced his desire to see the further growth and more rapid development of the university.
Adeniran, who currently is also the pro-chancellor and chairman of the council of ABUAD said he donated the books to ABUAD library “to complement the massive efforts of the Founder of the university in the interest of research and learning at ABUAD and as a signal for the promotion of a reading culture in the larger society.”
Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, in her speech on the occasion described the gesture of Professor of Adeniran as “a generous donation of books to ABUAD” and noted that the former minister had been “one of the most ardent supporters and a firm believer in our university.”
Mrs Olarinde noted that Professor Adeniran, as a lover of education, was reacting to a charge by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who said “any people that is starved with books, especially the right type of books, will suffer intellectual malnutrition, stagnation and atrophy,” saying by the donation, Professor Adeniran has “ensured that our students, and the next generation of Nigerian leaders, do not suffer from intellectual malnutrition.”
She said the “rare library donation, which will provide an invaluable source of information, knowledge and instruction to our university community, is undoubtedly a thoughtful legacy that will be treasured by current and future generations yet unborn.”
Professor Olarinde expressed the gratitude of the university to Adeniran, saying he had “done our founder and chancellor and indeed the whole university a very great honour by this donation and we will forever be thankful.”
At a well-attended ceremony chaired by the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Victor Kiladejo, Professor Adeniran, a professor of Political Science, handed over to ABUAD his entire library of several volumes covering Philosophy, Politics, Religion and others.
