Bishop of the Diocese of Awori, Church of Nigeria (Anglican communion, The Right Reverend (Dr) Johnson Akin Atere, has called on the Federal Government to probe sources of ammunition used by herdsmen to perpetrate violence.

He stated this on Friday, while delivering the bishop’s charge at the first session of the third synod of Awori Diocese, held at The Cathedral Church of St. James, Ipate Oyinbo, Ota, Ogun State, which had as its theme,  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation.

“We call on the Federal Government to probe the sources of the ammunition used by herdsmen and cattle rustlers, and our security agencies should stop treating herdsmen, responsible for massacre in different parts of the country, with kid gloves. We equally urge the government to rise up to the security challenges if the nation must have peace and unity.

“We challenge the government to ensure no stone is left unturned in bringing the perpetrators of killings in Southern Kaduna, Agatu community of Benue State, and several other communities in the Eastern and the South-South of the country to book. Those arrested should be conclusively prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others,” Bishop Atere stated.

While lamenting what he described as the “myriad of strikes” that had characterised the health sector and calling for urgent measures to address the situation, he called on Nigerians “to join hands with the government to do all that is necessary to mitigate the impact of corruption in our society.”

He called for efforts to decrease the level of unemployment and attendant poverty, expressing satisfaction with the Ogun State government’s development efforts.

He urged government to fasttrack the compensation plan, as well as ensure the timely completion of the various projects as promised.

Also present at the synod were Bishop Solomon Kuponu of ijebu North Diocese; Bishop Samuel Ogundeji of Egba West Diocese; Bishop Michael Oluwarohunbi of Yewa Diocese; Bishop James Odedeji of lagos West Diocese; Ojotumoro of Abigi, Ijebu Waterside, Oba Oludolapo Ogunye; Chancellor, Lagos West Diocese, Hon.
