Director of the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU), Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, has urged stakeholders to prioritise the education of creative cultural artists in Nigeria to enable them to stay updated with modern technology and showcase their cultural goods globally.
Okebukola stated this during a transformative workshop themed “Entrepreneurship Education and Skill Acquisition Workshop for Young Creative Artists” held at the Defenders’ Children Academy and Defenders’ Model College, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, brought together participants from educational institutions, cultural organisations, cultural entrepreneurs, students, and the general public.
Addressing participants, Okebukola stressed the need for entrepreneurship education and skill acquisition, particularly for young creative artists.
The director, who also stressed the importance of cultural diversity and creativity as pivotal tools for sustainable economics, reiterated the need for stakeholders to prioritise the education of creative cultural artists to improve their development and acquired skills.
This, Okebukola believes, would enable them to sell their cultural goods to the outside world, promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage globally.
He said: “This workshop aims to empower young creative talents with the knowledge and skills to thrive in the competitive global cultural market. This will introduce participants to strategies for leveraging digital technology to enhance their cultural goods and expand their reach.
“This is in line with IACIU’s commitment to promoting the diversity of cultural expressions and supporting young Africans in building a sustainable future through culture and creativity.”
The convener of the programme and a programme officer at the institute, Miss Omotayo Ifesewa Shittu, assured participants that the outcome of the deliberations at the workshop would be packaged and forwarded to relevant culture stakeholders and authorities.
This, she hopes, would enable them to come up with actionable cultural policies that would boost, protect, and preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
