Why previous constitution review failed —Deputy Speaker

Published by

THE Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Lasun Yusuf, on Tuesday, gave an insight into why previous effort to alter the 1999 Constitution as amended failed, saying that, it was due to system that was adopted.

The Deputy Speaker, said, he had discovered that the previous exercises were rubbished because they were in a single Bill saying that, this time around, “we have adopted a system whereby we present the Bill for assent batch by batch instead of trashing the whole exercise.”

He also assured Nigerians that the report of the amendment exercise would be signed by President Muhammadu Buhari unlike the previous exercise because it would be in piecemeal.

A statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Wole Oladimeji, ahead of  a three-day retreat on the review of the constitution disclosed that, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosu, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and the former Speaker of the House, Dimeji Bankole and Chief Olusegun Osoba would feature in the retreat.

The retreat, according to him, is being organised by the House Special Ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution chaired by Honourable Lasun and was aimed at putting up a framework for the conduct of the exercise.

Lasun explained that the retreat was meant to interface with various stakeholders with the aim of collating their views on the amendment process.

He stated that the report of the fourth Alteration Bill would be presented to the public.

The theme of the exercise is “The Imperatives of Constitution Review/Amendment in Nation Building and  Prince Bola Ajibola is expected to present a paper.
