Preventing tanker explosions: A call to action for Nigeria

The recent tanker explosion in Suleja, Niger State, which claimed the lives of many people and injured others, is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by these vehicles on our roads.

The government must take the lead in preventing tanker explosions. Here are some steps they can take:

Ensure that tanker drivers adhere to safety protocols, such as regular vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices, as recommended by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Upgrade roads to reduce the risk of accidents and explosions, as emphasized by the Nigerian Ministry of Works and Housing.

Ensure that emergency services, such as firefighters and ambulances, are readily available to respond to accidents, as stated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

While the government has a critical role to play, residents also have a responsibility to prevent tanker explosions. This includes: avoid crowding around tanker accidents as this can increase the risk of injury or death. If you witness a tanker accident, report it immediately to the authorities.

To prevent tanker explosions in the long term, we need to adopt a multifaceted approach that involves: investing in alternative energy sources to reduce our reliance on tanker-delivered fuel. We should also implement measures to reduce road accidents, such as improving road design and enforcing traffic laws.

By working together, we can prevent tanker explosions and ensure a safer, more secure future for all Nigerians.
