Presidential honours award: NYSC inaugurates national selection committee

THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General, Major General Suleiman Kazaure on Monday, inaugurated a 13-man President’s NYSC Honours Award Selection Committee.

The committee is responsible for the evaluation of the performance and selection of Corps Members for National Award.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the DG tasked the committee on improving the standards already set by their predecessors.

He stated that the Community Development Service remains one of the major areas where the NYSC Scheme has recorded remarkable success over the years.

He added that public perception of the Scheme is soaring, due to Corps Members activities especially in the areas of infrastructure, education, healthcare delivery and agriculture in many rural communities across the country.

“As you embark on this round of selection process, l implore you to approach the task dispassionately with the emergence of candidates that will be acceptable to all”, Kazaure said.

The Acting Director, Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, Mr Sanusi Abdul-Rasheed explained that the essence of the President’s Honours Award is to reward excellence in service and to encourage the future generation of Corps Members to imbibe the spirit of dignity in labour and National integration.

He disclosed that on-the-spot assessment of the projects have been carried out while the National Selection Committee comprising of astute intellectuals will meticulously assess the nominees based on their citations forwarded by the State Secretariats.

The Chairman, NYSC Honours Award National Selection Committee, Professor Angela Freeman Miri, commended NYSC for its tremendous achievements by grooming youths for leadership roles.

She promised objectivity while discharging their official mandate adding that, “the NYSC is highly focused on the holistic development of Nigeria.”

The President’s NYSC Honours Award was instituted in 1974 as a way of encouraging Corps Members to contribute to National development by embarking on Community Development Projects among other activities.
