Presidency to Obasanjo: You lack moral right to condemn any govt

Published by

The Presidency has criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo, urging him to apologise to Nigerians for alleged failures during his administration rather than criticizing other governments.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, described Obasanjo’s regime as the “most corrupt government in Nigeria’s history.”

Dare’s remarks were in response to Obasanjo’s keynote lecture at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, where he labelled Nigeria under Tinubu’s leadership as a “failing state.”

Obasanjo attributed the country’s challenges to corruption, insecurity, and disunity, while also calling for the dismissal and vetting of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and other INEC officials.

He accused the former president of lacking the moral authority to criticise any administration, stating that Obasanjo should apologise for failing to lay the foundational infrastructure Nigeria needed for progress.

Dare dismissed Obasanjo’s comments as insincere and hypocritical, alleging that his administration undermined democracy and mismanaged resources.

“Former President Obasanjo is a man with a tremendous capacity for mischief, and Nigerians know it,” Dare said. “His presidency is on record as the most corrupt. There has been no explanation for how $16 billion was wasted on generating megawatts of darkness across the nation.”

Dare also referenced Obasanjo’s failed third-term bid, describing it as a “murderous rage.” He added that successive administrations have struggled to address the problems left behind by Obasanjo’s leadership.

“President Tinubu is now making progress in cleaning up the mess Obasanjo left behind,” Dare concluded.
