Presidency confirms Osinbajo in chopper crash

The Presidency has confirmed that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo survived a helicopter crash on Saturday.

The aircraft carrying him crashed landed in Kabba, Kogi State.

Osinbajo and all other occupants of the chopper were said to have escaped with lives.

The Vice President’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, confirmed the crash in a tweet on his handle @akandeoj.

He said; “VP Osinbajo’s Chopper crash lands in Kabba, but he and the entire crew safe. He is continuing with his engagements and plans for the day in Kogi State.”

It will be the second time in the life of the present administration that Osinbajo is getting involved in a helicopter incident.

On June 8, 2018, the chopper that took him to the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, could not take him back to the villa as it was said to have made a forced landing about 30 seconds after take-off.

He had been invited as the Special Guest of Honour to a ceremony that saw the graduation of 40 senior officers of Customs.

The Vice President attended the event with Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; Chief of Air Staff, Sadiq Abubakar; former Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi  Adeosun, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali and other top officials of the government.

Reports said at the end of the event, the Vice-President, escorted by some officials, boarded the helicopter with the intention to return to the presidential villa, but on taking off, after some seconds in the air, the chopper was forced to make an emergency landing.

He thereafter departed for his office by road.

Akande, on that occasion, had said that Osinbajo had to abandon the aircraft due to technical reasons.

Akande tweeted after the Gwagwalada incident:  “VP Osinbajo attended the graduation ceremony of Nigeria Customs Senior Course in Gwagwalada today.

“On his way back, it was decided, for technical reasons, not to fly the chopper that had brought him to the venue.

“He drove back to the Presidential Villa and continued his schedule.”
