Five suspected kidnappers, including a pregnant woman and a policeman, have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command.
Members of the gang had reportedly gone to receive the ransom, which was brought for one of their victims, over the weekend when they were arrested.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the suspects were arrested in the Ijede area of Ikorodu by a crack team of Special Detectives, who were deployed to the area by the state police commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade.
The spokesperson of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of “some kidnappers” to the Nigerian Tribune.
A police source, who pleaded anonymity while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, said, “The gang members were at the Ijede Creek to collect ransom when they were arrested.”
A resident of Ijede, who simply identified himself as Remi, told the Nigerian Tribune that “The kidnappers abducted a man and contacted his family to pay ransom.”
“The policemen told them to play along with them and even volunteered to take the ransom to the kidnappers.”
The source further stated, “The policemen took the ransom to the creek, leading to the arrest of the leader and other members of the gang.”
The gang reportedly included a pregnant woman who was in charge of cooking and feeding at the kidnappers’ den.
A serving policeman, whose identity is yet unknown, was also said to have been arrested.
Hundeyin, a Superintendent of Police, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, said, “Yes, I can confirm that we arrested some kidnappers.”
He, however, added, “I don’t know their number or identity, but we arrested some kidnappers.”
