Poverty major cause of drug abuse in Nigeria — Marwa

Published by

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. General Buba Marwa rtd., says poverty is the major cause of drug abuse and drug addiction in Nigeria and other nations in the world.

The CEO disclosed this today to journalists in Yola while inspecting the ultramodern office and barracks under construction for officers and men of the agency.

He said most people who take drugs do it to take away the stress of economic pressure.

But note, this is not exclusive to Nigeria, stating that research has shown that people involved in drug addiction across the world were due to economic pressure.

The very elated Marwa was full of praise for President Bola Ahamed Tinubu for allowing continuity in governance

“This project started during the Buhari administration, and when he came on he continued, and today as you can see, this project is 95 per cent complete.”

” I must commend the contractors and the consultant for a very good job done, The quality of materials used in the design was followed to the letter.”

Gen. Marwa assured Nigerians, officers, and men of the agency that the first phase of the project will be inaugurated before midyear.

The chairman also stated that NDLEA barracks are expected to be built in all six geopolitical regions of the country.

“As soon as this one is completed and inaugurated, we will move on to the next one, which is going to the southern part.”.

The project, which was started in 2022, has 48 three-bedroom flats for senior officers, 88 two-bedroom flats, and 1235 one-bedroom flats for junior officers.

Other facilities include the zonal commander’s and state commander’s offices, official residences, clinics, parade grounds, quarter guards, and other facilities in this first phase.
