The wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has attributed poverty and greed among parents as the root cause of child trafficking in the country.
Mrs Nwifuru made this statement during a road walk/sensitization rally to mark the 2023 International Day against Trafficking in Persons.
The program, tagged “Reach every victim of Trafficking, Leave no One Behind,” was organised by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in collaboration with the Office of the Governor’s Wife, Civil Society Organizations, and other relevant agencies.
The governor’s wife urged Nigerian parents to take advantage of free primary and secondary education in their respective states to send their children to school. This would prevent robbing the children of their dreams, hopes, and right to live a life free from fear and exploitation.
Mrs Nwifuru also commended the people of her state for their support and determination to end child trafficking, child marriage, and other forms of child abuse. Their efforts aimed to stop organ trafficking, maltreatment, and molestation of children.
She emphasized, “Our children are being used for all forms of outrageous activities that can endanger their lives, and because they are far from home, they have nobody to report to.”
On her part, the head of Ebonyi NAPTIP liaison office, Mrs Bertha Offor, speaking on behalf of the Agency’s Director-General, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to bringing all perpetrators of human trafficking to justice.
She commended the First Lady and Ebonyi State government for their support and strategic efforts in combating the menace of human trafficking in the state. Mrs Offor called on everyone to support the fight against human trafficking.
