Pope Francis’ condition is not life-threatening, but he has not yet fully recuperated from his illness, doctors from Gemelli Hospital stated during a press briefing on Friday.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital with a respiratory infection, which has since developed into pneumonia in both lungs. He has remained under medical care since last week.
“The Pope is fine, but the reason we are here is it has been one week in the hospital,” doctors said in English, noting that Francis is 88 years old and mortal while also emphasising that he has maintained his sense of humour throughout the ordeal.
The Vatican previously stated that the Pope was hospitalised last week for “necessary tests” and to continue his ongoing treatment for bronchitis.
