Colombian pop star Shakira has been hospitalised in Peru due to a stomach issue, forcing her to cancel her scheduled performance on Sunday.
The singer announced the news in a social media post, apologising to fans for the unexpected change.
“I’m sorry to let you all know that last night I had to go to the emergency room for an abdominal issue and I’m currently hospitalized,” she wrote. “The doctors taking care of me have let me know that I’m not well enough to perform tonight.”
Shakira arrived in Lima on Saturday, marking her first performance stop in the city in more than a decade. Videos shared on her account showed a large crowd of fans welcoming her at the airport. Despite her hospitalization, the singer expressed hope that she would recover quickly.
“I hope to be better by tomorrow and that they release me from the hospital as soon as possible to be able to put on the show that I’ve prepared for you all,” she said.
Shakira, widely recognised for her contributions to Latin music’s global appeal, is known for hits such as La Tortura, her collaboration with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, and her 2023 diss track against former partner Gerard Piqué, produced by Argentine DJ Bizarrap. Her most popular song, Hips Don’t Lie, featuring Wyclef Jean, remains a defining track of her career.
The singer, who began her tour last week in Brazil, is set to perform again in Lima on Monday, pending her recovery.
