Poor oral hygiene can lead to infertility—study

Published by

Researchers have warned that poor oral hygiene and gum disease could significantly delay the chances of conceiving.

In a review, experts said there was a consistency among studies about possible positive association between poor oral health and fertility problems such as improper spermatological parameters and erectile dysfunction, increased time to conceive and endometriosis.

The experts, however, said that there was an inconsistency about relationship between gum disease and male-babies sub fertility in future.

According to them, good oral health and regular dental check-ups in which both men and women are attending, particularly prior to conceiving, appears to be helpful in enhancing reproductive ability.

They stated that since oral health problems, especially gum disease, are treatable,  improvement in  oral health in the community through periodontal and dental treatments  may contribute to overcoming impediments to childbearing.

According to them, “Recognition of such relationship between oral health and decreased fertility by gynecologists and dentists can contribute to the prevention of serious side effects of these problems.

“Oral hygiene is an important component of general health and also a contributing factor for improved sexual health. Control of oral inflammation and regular dental check-ups by men and women, particularly prior to conceiving, could promote to enhanced reproductive ability.”

The 2017 review was published in Journal of Midwifery and Reproductive Health.

Over the past two decades, a significant association has been observed between systemic diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis with poor oral health.

Gum disease has been known to be associated with heart disease, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, respiratory and kidney disease, as well as problems in pregnancy that include miscarriage and premature birth.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is where the gums and supporting tissue are chronically infected and inflamed.

About one in 10 people is thought to have severe periodontal disease. The best way to prevent it is to brush and floss your teeth regularly.

Fertility problems are associated with cost burdens, constituting a crisis in families. These problems may cause marital conflicts, leading to divorce and more serious issues in societies where women are primarily stereotyped as mothers.

In addition, reproductive problems can result in various psychological-emotional disorders, including depression, anxiety, hopelessness, guilt and feelings of worthlessness in life, especially in women.
