Politicians are responsible for bastardising civil service in the country, Bauchi gov declares

Bauchi State Governor, Sen Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir has declared that politicians are to be held accountable for the bastardization of civil service in the country through the politicisation of the process of appointment and promotion.

The Governor made the declaration on Monday while receiving the report on civil service reform in the state saying that, “bad governance, mismanagement of process and procedures, distortion of services records have characterized the civil service in recent years.”

He said that “yes, the politicians including me are guilty of the rot that is in the civil service today because of political influence and favouritism in the appointment and deployment of officers from the local government areas and other sectors.”

While saying that there must be the geographical spread of top appointments in the civil service, he said that it should not be at the detriment of effective and efficient service which is the bedrock of the civil service.

Bala Mohammed further lamented that civil servants now play politics in the open at the detriment of their service saying, “I have asked them in the state civil service not to play politics with me but they should concentrate on the job they are employed to do. We want to separate politics from civil service.”

In the report, he assured that government will carefully study it and implement the recommendations that are best suited for the state civil service because according to him, “our aim is to have a robust civil service that can be the pride of others.”

While submitting the report, the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Gambo Magaji explained that it is in three volumes containing all the findings of the committee in the cause of its assumption which took about 2 months to complete.

He explained further that the recommendation was based on the reality of the Civil service as it is at present declaring that it actually needed to be reformed in line with the present global best practices.

Gambo Magaji commended the Governor for taking the bold step of reforming the badly politicized civil service in the state in order to make it more efficient and effective.
