An unidentified policeman attached to the Mopol 20 Squadron was killed in an auto accident on Thursday while riding his motorcycle along the Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The officer was reportedly on his way to work when he was struck by a vehicle involved in an accident on the bridge.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident and the officer’s death in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
In his statement, Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Following distress calls via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers at 06:44 am, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated its Response Team from the Command Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.”
He continued that “Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at the incident scene, it discovered a Volvo Truck, registration number FKJ 484 YA, laden with goods headed inward Arepo, a Toyota Hi Ace Bus, registration number BWR 371 XC and a Mercedes Bus, registration number unknown, were involved in a road accident.
Investigations conducted by the LRT revealed that the truck crashed into a Mercedes Benz Bus while on motion, swerved off the road and fell uncontrollably on a Toyota Hi Ace bus parked by the roadside. ”
According to the LASEMA boss “A Police Officer attached to Mopol 20 Division manoeuvring his way back to office on his motorcycle, got trapped by the incident and died instantly.”
He explained that “The commodity ( deceased polic man’ s body ) was extricated with use of the Agency’s heavy-duty equipment-the Super Metro.
The commodity was bagged and taken to Ojodu Police Station for further processing.”
