Angry residents of Itobe, a community in the Ofu local government area of Kogi state, have burnt in police patrol vans over the death of a man identified as Abuh Wada, popularly known as Abuh Keke.
The deceased, a tricycle (keke) rider, was allegedly shot by a police officer while trying to quell the crisis in the area.
The incident took place in the Abuja Area of Itobe around 11 am on Friday
According to the information gathered, Abuh Keke was coming out of his house when a stray bullet hit him.
However, the crisis reportedly followed a feud between two warring groups in the area.
An eye witness, Umar Etu, said the crisis started when a police patrol team that came in to quell the situation shot and killed a resident, adding that angry residents stormed the police station and set two police patrol vans on fire.
“The angry mob were almost setting the police station on fire after they overpowered men of the policemen in the station, if not for the prompt arrival of the area commander,” he said.
When contacted, the state police command’s spokesman, SP William Ovye Aya, did not respond to texts and calls.
