FIVE students of Kaduna State University (KASU) and a staff member were paraded by the Kaduna State Police Command for allegedly stealing about 55 computers belonging to the university.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Aliyu Usman, told newsmen on Wednesday that the management of the university reported the case to the command and action was taken immediately.
“On December 21, 2016 at about 2p.m., the acting Registrar of the Kaduna State University reported to the Commissioner of Police that on December 20, at about 2:00a.m., 20 pieces of HP desktop computers were stolen from the university computer centre.
“Previously, about 35 of the computers were stolen from the e-library of the school, making a total of 55, which were estimated at N17,600,000.
“In the course of investigation, operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Kaduna, apprehended one Aminu Shuaibu, a staff member of the university, with one of the computers. One Dauda Mohammed Umar, the security man on duty when the incident happened, was also arrested along with one Stephen Simon, a student of the university, who conspired with one Nosa and three others to perpetrate the crime.
“Also, another student of the university, one Dennis Monday, and one Kamal Aminu, were arrested and 32 of the stolen computers sold to them were recovered,” he said.
The principal suspects, Aminu Shuaibu, who works at the university library, told Metro that he was not a criminal.
“I am a staff member of the university and I work in the library. What happened was that I took one of the computers in my office home before thieves broke into our office. I reported the case to the school authorities but I did not remember to tell them that one computer was with me,” he said.
In his statement, Stephen, 28, a 400-level Physics student of the university, said one Musa approached him and asked him if he was interested in buying computers, and he accepted.
“I bought the computers at N22,000 each. I don’t even know where the Musa is now, but I have been seeing him around the school since my 200-level,” he disclosed.
