Police officer chops off pregnant wife’s hand in Plateau

A police officer identified as Ibrahim Shagari has cut off the hand of his pregnant wife, Hauwa Shagari, for spending N3,000 out of the N20,000 he kept with her for safekeeping in Plateau State.

The Nigerian Tribune learned that the incident occurred on Monday in the Dong community of Jos South local government area of the state during an argument between the husband and wife over the money the former entrusted to the latter for safekeeping, which degenerated into hot arguments and fisticuffs between the two of them.

A source close to the family disclosed that the husband, in an uncontrolled rage after overpowering the woman, went for a sharp object and cut off his wife’s hand. He succeeded in cutting off the hand before the intervention of those living within the vicinity.

The source further added that the woman was rescued from the man and taken to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, where she is presently receiving treatment, adding that the man later submitted himself to the police.

It was further confirmed that the man who is presently being detained at the State Police headquarters had confessed that he carried out the dastardly act under the influence of alcohol.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday over the incident, Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Caroline Panklang Dafur, strongly condemned the monstrous act of violence perpetrated against Mrs. Hauwa Shagari by her husband, a police officer.

“This is the greatest act of inhumanity to man; the horrifying act has left quite a lot of people shocked and outraged. No woman deserves to be treated with such cruelty and violence, and it is even more unacceptable that this act was committed by a person sworn to protect and serve—a so-called police officer.

“Gender-based violence is a menace that affects countless women and girls in our society. Sadly, it often remains shrouded in silence and secrecy, leaving countless individuals trapped in a cycle of fear, pain, and suffering. This monstrous act of gender-based violence that has developed wings and is soaring over our skies must be brought down by good.”

“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that perpetrators of such acts are held accountable and that victims receive the support and justice they deserve.
My Ministry and the Plateau State Gender Commission have begun an investigation into the unfortunate incident and will ensure justice is served.”

She, however, commended the Nigeria Police Force and Plateau State Command for swiftly arresting the perpetrator and charged the command to use the same vigour in concluding their investigation so that justice is fully served to serve as a warning to others that the long arm of the law will spare no one, regardless.

Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, proved abortive, as he could not be reached on his phone.
