THE Jigawa State Police Command has arrested seven kidnappers and bandit in Gwaram and Dutse local government area in the state.
Parading the suspects, the state Commissioner of Police, Rasheed Akintunde said the success was achieved five days after he assumed duty in the state. He added that the syndicate of kidnappers who had been terrorising Gwaram and its environs had been dislodged by the men of the Division and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) deployed to the area by the command.
According to him, his command received a distress call last Sunday at about 11.20a.m from one of the Fulani settlement in Gwaram area that some hoodlums numbering about eight stormed the settlement, harassed members of a family and left with a girl as hostage.
He stated further that “the combined team swung in action and pursued the kidnappers. In the process, one of the kidnappers, Abubakar (other name withheld) was arrested and while the girl was rescued unhurt. In the course of investigation, five of the suspects on the run were apprehended.”
He gave the names of other arrested suspects as Dan’azumi, Garba, Yahuza, Kecela Musa Muala and Magaji (other names withheld); all of Sharhori, Larabawa and Daba Fulani settlements of Gwaram Local Government Area.”
Akintunde said that the suspects also confessed that they were responsible for kidnapping of a girl two months ago at Sharhori Fulani settlement, on whom they collected the sum of N170,000 as ransom, as well as another girl from the house of one Alhaji Maikudi of Lewa last month on whom they also got N400,000 as ransom.
The police also arrested one Abdullahi Jibrin of Baranda village, Dutse Local Government area who allegedly attacked one Ali Mohammed of Jiba village while he was returning home from Baranda market on his Boxer motorcycle.
Items recovered from the suspects include N132,140, two locally-made guns, four handsets and Airtel SIM packs of a network service provider, Akintunde added.
“Investigations are in progress and the suspects would be arraigned in the court of law after the conclusion of investigations,” the Police Commissioner disclosed.
