Police intercepts suspected IPOB agents in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intercepted suspected IPOB agents who were allegedly planning to launch an attack on the state and its facilities.

In a release signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Timfon John, and made available to journalists in Uyo, it was reported that the suspects were intercepted by the Command’s operatives during an intensive patrol along Stadium Road in Abiakpo Edem Inyang Village, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

According to the release, the patrol was conducted following intelligence that IPOB was planning an attack on the state and some of its facilities.

“During the patrol, the team flagged down a Lexus Jeep with Registration Number KUJ 886 FF. Upon seeing the police, two unidentified young men exited the vehicle and fled into the nearby forest.

“While searching the vehicle, the team recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with eight rounds of 8mm ammunition, one locally made long-range pistol, one cartridge, four different vehicle number plates, Zenith and Access Bank ATM cards, a national driver’s license card, black clothing, bags containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp, and a torchlight.

“The team, with the assistance of the village youth, combed the forest in search of the fleeing suspects. However, no arrests have been made so far.

The team is not resting on its laurels and is determined to apprehend the suspects, along with their sponsors and accomplices,” the release read in part.

The Command appeals to residents of the community and the state at large to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unknown movements to the police for prompt action.

The Command emphasized its commitment to making Akwa Ibom inhospitable and uncomfortable for criminal elements.
