Police: Enforcement of third party insurance scheme begins in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by Commissioner Mr. Baba Mohammed Azare, began enforcing the third-party insurance scheme on Saturday, February 1, 2025, following directives from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Ehbetokun.

The enforcement triggered a noticeable decrease in traffic across major roads in Uyo and surrounding areas, as the police conducted rigorous stop-and-search operations to ensure compliance with the insurance requirement.

The directive had sparked debate, with some groups requesting a delay in enforcement to allow more time for public awareness campaigns. During a stakeholder meeting, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Sunny James, called for a postponement until further enlightenment efforts were made.

Despite these calls, Commissioner Azare assured that the enforcement was proceeding smoothly, noting that motorists had generally complied. He emphasized that having proper documentation, including third-party insurance, was a legal requirement for using Nigerian roads, and warned that non-compliant vehicles would be impounded.

The exercise will continue across the 31 local government areas of the state, with police ensuring adherence to the law and taking action against violators.
