Police dock surety of Ibadan politician for alleged perversion of justice

The police on Monday arraigned a man identified as Ajalaruru Gbolahan before a Chief Magistrate Court, Ibadan Magisterial District on allegations bordering on obstructing, prevention and perversion of the course of justice by standing surety for a politician, Rotimi Ajanaku, who according to the police was involved in a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

He was arraigned in lieu of Ajanaku for failing to produce him on January 9 and other subsequent dates that he was directed to produce him, an offence which the police prosecutor, S.B. Hammed, stated is contrary to and punishable under Section 126 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II, Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria 2000.

Ajalaruru was docked alongside another man, Olagunju Adesola (44) in a case delineated MI/1.13c before Chief Magistrate O.O. Adisa though their pleas were not taken.

Adesola was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiring to commit felony to wit; unlawful possession of firearms, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 6 (b) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, Cap R11, Vol.14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria and unlawfully having possession of a locally made single barrel gun with one life cartridge without justification, an offence contrary and punishable under Section 3 of the Armed Robbery and Firearms Act, Cap R11, Vol.14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria .

Ajalaruru was docked on a three-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony to wit: perverting justice, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol 11, laws of Oyo state of Nigeria 2000 and obstructing justice by not producing the suspect he stood surety for.

Magistrate Adisa ordered that the first defendant be remanded at Agodi prisons but admitted him bail in the sum of N150, 000 and two sureties in like sums with a condition that the sureties must each have evidence of tax clearance for three years.

The case was adjourned till March 26, 2019.
