Police confirm beheading of widow, burning of suspect in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the beheading of a widow on her farm and the subsequent setting ablaze of the prime suspect by a mob in Otor-Owhe, Isoko North Local Government Area.

Tribune Online gathered that the suspect, identified as Oghenero (37), on Wednesday, killed and chopped off the head of the widow popularly known as ‘Oshomirara’ on her farm.

Witnesses said the suspect was spotted when he was fleeing from the bush with the severed head in a polythene bag dripping with fresh blood.

Those who saw the movement of the suspect, on hearing and sighting the headless body of the victim on her farm, raised the alarm and went after Oghenero.

A mob, comprising local vigilance group members and youths, reportedly stormed Oghenero’s residence, where they found the woman’s head.

He was reportedly apprehended, demobilised on both legs while attempting to escape, and subsequently set ablaze by the irate mob.

The motive behind the dastardly act of killing remains unclear, and as of the time of filing the report much more as the prime suspect has been silenced.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, who frowned at the act of growing jungle justice in society, in his response, confirmed that the suspect had already been lynched and set ablaze before the police could access the crowd.

He said: “The suspect murdered the woman in the bush, severed her head, and took it to his house.

“When the headless body was discovered, members of the community traced him to his residence, found the victim’s head, and proceeded to set him ablaze.”
