Police arrests protesting AAUA students

SOME students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) Ondo State, have been arrested by security operatives in the area following a planned protest by the students.

The students numbering 20 were said to have gathered around the school community to further press home their demand against the obnoxious policy of the school management.

The school management had on Wednesday ordered the students to vacate the school, asking them to proceed on a mid Semester break, in order to avoid any breakdown of law and order within the campus and school community.

The students were said to be protesting over the decision of the school management to impose the new rule of No School Fee, No Test.

However, it was gathered that some of the students assembled around the school in the early morning of Thursday, when policemen from the town dispersed them and arrested some of the students.

They were said to be planning to embark on protest against the new policy of payment before the examination, and were arrested for illegal assembly, saying the act is capable of disrupting the existing peace in the area.

According to one of the students, they were forced to sleep on the floor while they faced the sun before they were moved to the police station.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has ordered the immediate release of the students of the AAU.

Akeredolu gave the directive to after receiving a briefing of the incident from the State Police Commissioner, Mr Undie Adie.

Akeredolu said the state is already looking into the matter, and urged the students to go home and the maintain peace, saying “there is need to maintain peace in the campus and the state at large.”
