Two factory workers at Okpella Cement Company in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State are presently cooling off in a police cell in Benin City following their arrest over a plot to kidnap their bosses for a princely amount of money.
The suspects, Obi Bright and Favour Ede were said to have attempted to engage the services of kidnappers from neighbouring Kogi State to abduct their bosses, Uche Dimgba and Ekuweme Chukwuka for ransom purposes.
A police source disclosed that one of the suspects, Bright who recruited Favour had mandated him to engage the services of some kidnappers based in Kogi State to abduct the Dimgba and Ekuweme.
The suspects were said to have contacted a middle man who promised to take them to the kidnappers’ den in Kogi State for the operation.
Citing the potential victims’ generosity and kind-heartedness, the middle man developed cold feet and backed out of the conspiracy and reveal details of the kidnap plan to the soldiers guiding the cement firm in Okpella.
The soldiers promptly informed the police of the plan and the middle man was advised to play along with the two suspects, who then calmly assured them that the kidnap plan will be properly executed.
According to the source, the soldiers were said to have swooped in and nabbed the suspects after receiving solid facts of their abduction strategy which was scheduled to take place the next e.
The suspects were arrested and handed over to the Edo State Command of the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Units.
The source disclosed that one of the suspects reportedly confessed to the crime the plan, adding:
“The kidnappers requested for the pictures of my bosses, the pictures of their cars. After that, they asked me, if I have access to his financial statements. I said no Those were the facts the kidnappers requested from me.”
The Edo State Police spokesman, Mr Bello Kontongs, who confirmed the story said that the suspects were brought to the State Police Command headquarters on Wednesday.
While cautioning criminals in the state to desist from their nefarious activities as Edo will not provide a sanctuary for them to perpetuate their actions, Bello, a deputy superintendent of police said that investigations were in full swing, assuring that they will be prosecuted.
