Police arrest suspected serial muderer, cultist in Delta

A suspected serial murderer and cultist, Charles Debi-Abate, has been arrested in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The 39-year-old, suspected to be a member of the Aro Bagger Confraternity and a native of Oghara but a resident of Mosogar, was arrested over his involvement in the murder of Destiny Idi.

Destiny Idi of Ovade Community at Ovie Road Ogharafe was hacked to death in cold blood on August 5, 2023, by some suspected cultists.

Following the brutal killing, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Wale Abass,  had directed the recently deployed DPO Oghara, CSP Olasunkanmi Musiliu, to unravel the cause of the death of the young man and arrest the perpetrators.

The DPO reportedly led policemen attached to the Division’s Surveillance Anti-crime Patrol Team on a discreet investigation, trailing the suspected mastermind of the act.

Their efforts were rewarded at about 1: 35p.m the same day while acting on an eyewitness account of the murder of the victim when the team stormed a hotel in Oghara and arrested one Debi-Abate.

In a statement by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Bright Edafe, he said preliminary investigation had revealed that the said suspect was part of the syndicate that murdered one 42-year-old Onyekachi Chibuzor, also known as Odogwu, on July  28, 2023.

According to DSP Edafe, the culprit has been involved in numerous cult-related attacks on perceived opponents in Oghara.

“The suspects, though they denied being part of the gang that murdered the said Solomon Idi, mentioned the duo of Onyeka and Paul (both surnames unknown) as those responsible for the murder.

“On 9/8/2023 at about 1130 hours, the suspect led the operatives to the premises of the said Onyeka and Paul, but the team did not meet them.

“On a thorough search of their premises, two English pump action guns, 20 live cartridges, and one GLK Benz SUV with Registration No. RBC-995-DG was recovered.

“Suspects and exhibits are in custody while the manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing,” he noted.
