Police arrest hit and run driver in Ondo

A truck driver, identified as Olalekan Ayedunni, has been arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly killing an official of the Internally Generated Revenue, Lekan Adekanye, with his truck in Ondo town, Ondo State.

Adekanye was crushed to death by the driver at Ayeyemi Street, Ondo town, on Monday but the driver ran away from the scene of the incident before he was later arrested by the police in the state.

According to a source, the Internally Generated Revenue, tried to wave down the truck which was loaded with planks when the ugly incident happened.

He said Ayedunni, the driver of the truck who tried to avoid the officials to pay for the tickets and refused to stop the truck and lost control in the process and crushed Adekanye to death.

The source said, “While Lekan was trying to stop the vehicle on a sloppy and bend road, the driver lost the control of the vehicle and crushed the deceased.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the development said the driver initially escaped from the scene in order to avoid being lynched by irate youths in the area.

The PPRO said, “I want to confirm that the driver has been arrested and he is now in our custody. We have also commenced investigation on the matter.

“He is also going to be charged to court as soon as we conclude the investigation we are conducting on the case.”

The police spokesman also said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Ondo.
