Pneumonia increases child mortality rate in Nigeria ― Osagie

The Federal Ministry of Health described pneumonia as a critical childhood disease that increased the child mortality rate in the country.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ohanire who presented by Mr Ayenowowo Olanrewaju a director in the ministry made the disclosure in his speech at the opening of a two-day stakeholder’s consultative workshop on the adoption of National integrated pneumonic control strategy in state at Manpower Development Institute Dutse, the state capital.

The minister reaffirmed the present administration to join hands with the national and international donor agency to promote the health sector to ensure a healthy society and children imparticular for a better future.

He called on state governments to domesticate a pneumonia strategy plan based on their peculiar environment adding that all hands should be on deck to control the menace of the child killer disease.

Participants of the workshop were drawn from the media, civil society organizations, development partners and government agencies

In his part, the Jigawa state commissioner of health, represented by the director of Public health, Dr Abdullahi Umar Namadi said in an effort to ensure healthy grown children the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the INSPIRING project came up with a programme of improving knowledge of the health personal working in the health facilities of the state on the prevention and treatment of pneumonia and other childhood related diseases.

Dr Abdullahi Umar Namadi explained that the state government and INSPIRING project sponsoring by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) through the Save the Children International agreed on organizing regular training and retraining of health personal on more and latest ideas about prevention and treatment of Childhood related diseases.

He, therefore, called on the participants of the workshop to discuss and recommend strategies that could address the pneumonia predicament in Jigawa state.
