Plateau killings: Conference of Speakers condemns renewed terrorist attacks

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has strongly condemned the recent wave of brutal terrorist attacks and killings across several states, including Plateau, Borno, Benue, Niger, and most recently, Kwara State.

These violent acts, the group said, have resulted in the tragic loss of lives, widespread displacement, and severe psychological trauma for thousands of Nigerians.

In a strongly worded statement, the Speakers expressed alarm over the escalating insecurity nationwide and criticised the apparent helplessness with which the crisis is being addressed.

“We are alarmed by the escalating insecurity in the land and the seeming helplessness with which these attacks are met. The time for mere condemnation and rhetoric has passed; urgent and coordinated action is now required at all levels of government to end these bloodbaths and restore peace and order,” the statement read.

While acknowledging that national security falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal Government, the Conference emphasised that all levels of government bear responsibility for the safety and welfare of citizens.

They urged state governors to step beyond ceremonial duties and infrastructure development and prioritise the protection of lives.

“State governors, in particular, must rise to the occasion and fully understand that governance is not limited to road construction and ceremonial functions. True governance is rooted in the protection of lives, the preservation of order, and the alleviation of suffering.”

The group called on state governments to strengthen security within their jurisdictions by introducing and enforcing laws that support community policing and grassroots security models. These frameworks, they said, must incorporate local intelligence, youth engagement, and social support structures.

In addition to tackling security, the Speakers also urged the Federal Government to address the worsening economic hardship being experienced across the country. They called for swift implementation of transparent and impactful relief initiatives to cushion the effects of inflation, unemployment, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“Dialogue, not distance, must define the relationship between the government and its people at this critical time.”

Reaffirming their legislative support, the Speakers pledged commitment to all necessary actions that would restore peace, ensure justice, and foster inclusive governance nationwide.

“The killings in Benue, Niger, Plateau, Borno, Kwara, and any part of Nigeria must not be allowed to continue unchecked. Justice must prevail, and peace must be restored.”

“Let it be known: the safety, dignity, and well-being of every Nigerian must remain the top priority of all arms and levels of government.”
