Plateau APC moves to replace Lalong as minister

Published by

BATTLE for who replaces immediate past governor of Plateau State, Mr Simon Lalong as a minister in the federal cabinet has been intensified among chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after he received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the senator-elect representing Plateau South.

Lalong, who is the current the minister of Labour and Employment, received his Certificate of Return last week following the Court of Appeal judgment affirming him as the duly elected senator, and not Napoleon Bali of the PDP.

A source told the Nigerian Tribune in Plateau that the party leadership in Plateau was on the verge of recommending some names to the Presidency for consideration as replacement for Lalong who sources claimed may have opted to go to the Senate.

In a statement at the weekend, a former member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Lumumba Dah Adeh, said the ministerial slot should be given to the gubernatorial candidate of the party, Dr. Nentawe Yiltwada from the Plateau Central.

He said that despite his case before the Supreme Court, there is a need to show him the immense respect and honor he deserves.

He mentioned that this is more so as the Central Zone, where he hails from, has been the most marginalized in terms of ministerial positions since 1999, adding that by doing so, the party shall be able to prepare and fortify him for the next election in 2027 since he has shown capacity.

The Nigerian Tribune learned that pressures are being mounted on the former Governor Lalong, who is the leader of the APC in the state, not to succumb to the antics of some stakeholders who want the next minister to come from Plateau South.

A group christened Vanguard Youths had earlier warned that any attempt to nominate anyone from the southern zone might affect the fortunes of the party, as other zones might feel ostracized in the scheme of things.

The group, in a signed statement, suggested that Plateau Central, which has produced one minister since the inception of this dispensation, as well as Plateau South, which has so far produced five, and Plateau North, should be considered.
