People living with disabilities in Edo on Monday commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for training them on various skills.
Mr Henry Ebose, the state Chairman of Joint National Assembly of Persons with disabilities (JONAPWD), gave the commendation in Benin during the closing ceremony of the two weeks intensive skills acquisition training.
The training was organised by NDDC for the physically challenged persons in Edo.
Ebose said: “For the past two weeks we have learnt different skills that most of us did not know before now and we have gathered adequate knowledge to enable us earn a living.
“We commend NDDC for the laudable initiative aimed at eradicating poverty among the physically challenged in Edo.”
He appealed to the commission to carry out more of such training for more people living with disabilities to benefit from the programme.
“The number of persons with disabilities who participated in the training is very small, compared to the number we have in the state.“

Mrs Janet Omole, one of the participants at the training also thanked NDDC for the programme adding that she “will forever remain grateful for the privilege to participate in the training.
“I am also grateful to NDDC and the Federal government for the training. It will enable me to take care of myself and my children,” she said.
Mrs Theresa Patrison, the coordinator of the NDDC skill acquisition programme in Edo, said the programme was organised by NDDC in partnership with other NGOs to empower people living with disabilities in the state
Patrison stated that the training was also to enable them to acquire necessary skills for self-employment in order for them to earn a living
“We started intensive skills acquisition training for the physically two weeks ago and the experience has been wonderful, they learnt what they did not know before now.
“NDDC brought the training programme to their doorstep and they all did very well during the training programme.
”I am happy that they did well in bead making, shoemaking, catering, photography and GSM repairs. They can now earn a living with the knowledge they have acquired,” she said.
She also explained that the participants had been made to open an account with First City Monumental Bank (FCMB).
According to her, the funds to purchase the starter packs for the carousel trade they learnt will be paid to them through the bank.
