One of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, Peace Pharmaceutical company, on Tuesday afternoon, went up in flames.
According to the head of department, media, and publicity of the Kwara state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, an estimated property worth N87.2 million was lost in the inferno while a total estimated property of about N1.4 billion was saved
It was gathered that the fire incident occurred at about 11:55 am at the company premises located opposite National Hajj Commission along Ilorin West local government Secretariat, Ilorin, Kwara state.
The state Fire Service said that the fire disaster originated from the process of off-loading ethanol from an ethanol tanker to the company’s ethanol reservoir, adding that a spark emitted from the pumping machine ignited the flammable liquid, leading to the outbreak of the fire.
“Upon arrival at the scene, the fire crew encountered a severe and rapidly spreading fire at the Peace Pharmaceutical Company. The firemen immediately commenced firefighting operations to contain the inferno and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the company.
“Despite the scale of the disaster, the firemen demonstrated their expertise and skill, successfully controlling and extinguishing the fire with their knowledge and prowess in firefighting techniques.
“During the incident, the Nigeria Police ‘D’ Division was also present to maintain order, preventing any possible aggression from a mob and staff of the company towards the firemen. Furthermore, the Federal Fire Service provided support in their efforts to extinguish the fire.
“This unfortunate incident resulted in substantial damage to the company. However, thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the firemen and the support of relevant authorities, the fire was brought under control, limiting further potential damage to the facility and surrounding areas.
“The fire incident at the company was a challenging emergency that required immediate and coordinated action from the fire crew and supporting authorities.”
Speaking on the incident, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, advised residents and property owners in the state to install and regularly maintain appropriate fire safety measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
