Peter Obi pays condolence visits to families of late Chukwu, Isiadinso

Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on Saturday paid condolence visits to the families of two iconic Nigerian footballers, Chairman Christian Chukwu and Christian Isiadinso, who both recently passed away.

While in Enugu, Obi visited the family of the legendary Christian Chukwu, former captain and coach of the Nigerian national team and a revered figure in African football history.

Chukwu, also a prominent member of the celebrated Old Rangers squad, was remembered not only for his prowess on the pitch but also for his lasting contributions to the sport as a mentor and leader.

Addressing the bereaved family, Obi offered words of comfort and prayer, expressing deep appreciation for Chukwu’s decades of service to the nation. Members of the Old Rangers were present in large numbers to receive him.

Obi also visited another football great and former goalkeeper of the national team, Emmanuel Okala.

He commiserated with him and other surviving members of the Old Rangers team over the loss of their colleagues, acknowledging the heavy burden of grief being borne by a generation that helped shape Nigerian football.

Similarly, Obi also paid a visit to the family of Christian Isiadinso at Enugu-Ukwu, another former captain of Rangers International.

Obi conveyed his condolences and assured the family of his continued prayers and support.

Mr Obi’s longstanding relationship with the Old Rangers dates back to his time as Governor. During his tenure, he initiated the payment of monthly stipends to the aging footballers, many of whom were facing economic hardship.

He also appointed some of them into various government roles, built houses, purchased plots of land, and took personal responsibility for the burial arrangements of those who passed away without strong family support.

Only recently, he hosted the Old Rangers to dinner at Cibus Kitchen in Enugu – a venue they fondly refer to for the naturalness of its meals. Notably, the late Christian Isiadinso was present at that event. Thursday’s visit, therefore, marked a sorrowful transition from celebration to mourning.

Obi’s visit underscored his broader philosophy of honouring those who have served the country with distinction.

As Governor, he named public structures after notable Nigerians: the Onitsha North Stadium after Justice Chuba Ikpeazu, the Onitsha South Stadium after Green Eagles’ first captain Godwin Achebe, and Anambra State University after Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. His legacy also includes naming the Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital and twin secretariat buildings after Sir Jerome Udoji.

Through his visits and gestures, Obi reminded Nigerians that national icons should not be forgotten.

“Let us not wait until our heroes are gone before we honour them,” he stated, urging society to appreciate and support those who served with integrity while they are still alive.
