Pensioners hold national delegates’ conference, elects new officers tomorrow

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners  (NUP) will hold its 10th quadrennial delegate conference tomorrow to elect new set of officers that will pilot the affairs of the union for the next four years.

An affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress, the NUP is a trade union that oversees the welfare of pensioners in the country.

In a statement made available to Nigerian Tribune and signed by Comrade Bunmi Ogunkolade, the union also stated that six governors will receive award of excellence in recognition of their role in the welfare of pensioners.

The governors include Lagos state governor, Akinwumi Ambode; Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun; Jigawa governor, Abdullahi Badaru; Plateau governor, Simon Lalong; Anambra governor, Willie Obiano and Yobe governor, Ibrahim Gaidam.

The union said the governors will be honoured during the delegates’ conference because they are not owing pensioners in their respective states.

The delegate conference with the theme, “challenges and prospects of pension administration in a democratic Nigeria” will also attract other top dignitaries including Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufai, NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, senators and others.

About 400 delegates are expected at the conference which will hold in Kaduna.

He said pensioners in the country will use to conference to assess what the future holds for the contributory pension scheme in the country and also set agenda for the Federal Government, as well as resolve on how to tackle state governors who have deliberately refused to offset pension liabilities to the senior citizens.
