Peace Corps crisis: Reps give IGP one week ultimatum

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions on Tuesday  issued a writ of summon on the Inspector-General of Police IGP Ibrahim Idris to appear before it unfailingly next week Tuesday barely one week after the summon was issued by the lawmakers over his refusal to the directive given to him on the continued Closure of the Headquarters of the National Peace Corps of Nigeria by the Police.

Consequently, ‎the Committee was forced to adjourn due to the absence of the IGP and other high ranking Police officers who were billed to appear before it on the reason for the continued closure of the office of the Peace Corps in Abuja.

Chairman of the House Committee Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta who issued the summon to the IGP at about 5.00pm at the Hearing Room 0.34 New Building House Complex said the Police boss had repeatedly shunned the invitation of the Committee over the matter.

He said that the IGP should appear on 6th March 2018 unfailing to give reasons why he refused to obey the court order for the Peace Corps to use its office.

Earlier in an oral presentation to the Committee, the Commandant General of the Peace Corps of Nigeria Amb Dickson Akor had told the Committee that the continued absence of the Police boss was a deliberate effort by the IGP to delay justice on the matter.

Akoh disclosed that the Peace Corps had secured two separate court orders mandating the Police hierarchy to unseal its corporate office in in Abuja.

Before the forced adjournment the Chairman of the Committee, Hon  Abonta, pointed out that no one arm of government was superior to another and vowed that the Committee would not allow the matter to linger for a long time due to the attitude of the IGP.
