PDP wins two assembly seats, APC one in Sokoto re-run election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the results of court-ordered re-run legislative elections in Sokoto with the main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won two while the All Progressive Congress (APC) won one.

Recall that the appeal court ordered for re-run elections in one Federal House of Representatives and two state houses of assembly following petitions by both oppositions alleging irregularities.

The affected constituencies include Yabo/Shagari federal constituency, Tambuwal West state constituent as well as Bodinga North state constituent.

Announcing the results on Sunday morning the returning officer for the Yabo/Shagari federal constituency, the Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Abdullahi Bagudo, declared Yusuf-Yabo the winner having the highest majority of the lawful votes in the whole election.

He added that he defeated his close rival and candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Abubakar Umar along with other party candidates.

Bagudo said the election was completed with the rerun election conducted in the 26 polling units of the constituency and the result added to the configured result of the last 2023 National Assembly election.

He said, “Yusuf-Yabo of PDP scored a total of 27,041 votes while the APC candidate Dan-Bukari scored a total votes of 26, 213 votes.”

The Chief Returning Officer noted that PDP”s candidate scored fewer votes of 2,249 votes in the rerun election compared to the APC candidate Abubakar Umar who scored a total of 3,741 votes.

PDP candidate had led in the substantive election with a total vote of 24,792 against 22,472 votes of the APC candidate added to the existing rerun election result.

”Having certified the requirements of the law, I Prof. being the Chief Returning Officer, I declare Yusuf-Yabo as duly elected having the highest majority of the lawful votes,” he said.

Also in Bodinga North state constituent, the Chief returning officer, Professor Farouk Tambuwal, announced Magaji Abubakar of the PDP as the winner of the election with a total votes of 6,488 votes.

He defeated his closest opponent and the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Yusuf Marafa Danchadi, who garnered 5,893 votes.

Speaking while declaring him the winner in the early hours of Sunday morning, Professor Farouk Tambuwal said, “having satisfied the requirements of the law, Magaji Abubakar of the PDP is hereby declared the winner is returned elected.”

Meanwhile, the candidate of the candidate of the APC, Dahiru Bashar Ahmed, was declared as the winner of Tambuwal West state constituent.

The returning officer, Professor Bayero Bukkuyu Kasim, states this while announcing the results following the conclusion of the election on Saturday.

Professor Bayero, while announcing the results said the candidate of the APC Dahiru Bashir Ahmed, as the winner of the election with a total number of 19,315 votes.

He defeated his closest opponent and the candidate of the PDP, Hantsi Sule Romo who polled a total number of 19,021 votes.
