PDP ready to participate in Lagos LG polls —Spokesperson

Published by

Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its readiness to participate in the next local government election holding in the state.

Spokesperson of the party, Honourable. Hakeem Amode, gave this position in his reaction, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, would convene a stakeholders’ meeting in the party once the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) releases the timetable for the election.

Amode said the PDP was looking forward to contesting in all the 20 LGAs and the 37 Local Council Development areas (LCDAs) based on the exiting arrangements.

However, he observed that election ought to hold in just 20 LGAs based on the judgment of the Supreme Court that granted financial autonomy to local council across country.”

“We are going to contest the election; we are preparing for it, but whether we will contest in 20 LGs or 20 LGs together with the 37 LCDAs, making 57, the party will still decide when LASIEC releases its timetable. But as of today, we are contesting in the 57 LCDAs.

“But, the APC is a party that does not obey court order. If they do, there should not be election in 57 LCDAs in Lagos State because of the Supreme Court judgment, we are supposed to follow the 20 LGs.

“Our preparation is for the 57 LCDAs; we are to contest, as usual, in the 57 LCDAs. If that changes, that change would be brought about by LASIEC by the time it issues out its three months’ notice that is allowed under the LASIEC Act to hold elections in Lagos State,” Amode stated.

“This is because the law says that there should be a three months’ notice and so we are waiting for that, we don’t even know when this election would hold, but we know that the tenure of this exco is going to end sometimes in June or July and election must be conducted before that time,” the PDP spokesman said.
