PDP congress: Six jostle for chairmanship seat in Lagos

Ahead of the State Congress of Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), coming up on October 16, 2021, six chieftains of the party have signified their intention to contest the chairmanship race in the state, having purchased the party form for the office, ahead of the closing date.

Tribune Online reliably gathered that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of PDP had given the opportunity for a two-week extension for purchase of form by interested aspirants, which will last on Friday, September 10, 2021, following the recent death of the incumbent chairman of the party, Dr Adegbola Dominic.

It was to allow the party in the state to get more prepared for the exercise, as PDP holds its National Convention in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), come October 30 and 31, 2021.

Findings revealed that those that have jumped into the chairmanship race include, Dr Tokunbo Pearse, a former governorship candidate in the state; Dr Amos Alabi Fawole, a party chieftain from Surulere area of Lagos, Niyi Adams, Olabode Philip Avodji, among others.

The development is coming as the factional chairman of PDP in the state, Dr Adedeji Doherty, said he was not interested in re-contesting the seat.

It will be recalled that Justice Oyekan Abdullai of a Lagos High Court, some weeks ago, ruled in favour of the late Dr Dominic, asking him to take over the chairmanship position of the party back from Doherty, who had been occupying the seat since November 2019, declaring illegal the State Congress held, and which brought Doherty into office.

Speaking last Friday, in a statement he made available to newsmen, Doherty said he would not run for a second term of office, maintaining that he remained a member of the party.

“I remain in PDP but will not run for a second term as PDP Lagos State Chairman.

“I am staying out of the race as a sacrifice I have to make in order to create the emergence of a new team of administrators; those I believe should ultimately bring a semblance of peace and unity to the party,” he said.
