Pay royalties to traditional rulers, Okowa urges political appointees

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has urged political appointees to begin to pay royalties to traditional rulers in their domains.

This is just as the governor reassured the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Ikenwoli  and the Itsekiri nation of his administration’s resolve to build Ogheye floating market and Trans Warri Road before the expiration of his second term.

Governor Okowa spoke during the courtesy visit of His Royal Majesty, the Olu of Warri, Ikenwoli I, to Government House in Asaba.

He urged political appointees to work with their royal fathers and ensure that they are carried along in all developmental projects in order to enhance partnership between government and traditional institutions in the state.

“Political appointees must henceforth reach out to their traditional rulers and pay royalties to them.

“It is important that they consult royal fathers and get their inputs in all developmental projects as a means of making governance easy and people focused from top to bottom,” Governor Okowa said.

He said government was aware of the importance of the market and road to the socioeconomic remodelling and transformation of Itsekiri land, adding that that was why the ministries of Works and that of Housing were mandated to do the needful so as to enable contractors to commence work in full scale in the dry season.

The governor noted that the Itsekiri nation and its traditional institution have been playing significant roles in peace building, socioeconomic and political development of the state, reiterating that the promises he made during electioneering would be fulfilled to further deepen government’s partnership with the people across the state.

He, however, called on the Federal Government and President Muhammadu Buhari to resuscitate Warri and Koko Ports due to their potential economic benefits to both federal and state governments.

Speaking earlier, the Olu of Warri, who was accompanied on the visit by the Ologbosere of Warri Kingdom, Chief Ayiri Emami and other senior chiefs, thanked the governor for appointing worthy sons and daughters of Itsekiri nation into his cabinet.

He urged him to sustain his good governance across the three senatorial districts in the state and focus substantially on the stronger Delta agenda.
