There was palpable fear and tension as people scampered for safety when a passenger train rammed into a Toyota Hilux van at Woji area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, early on Monday morning.
According to an eye witness, the incident happened at the Rumurolu-Woji Raliway line, even as many people were said to have been injured but no life was lost in the train mishap.
The eye witness claimed that the Toyota Hilux van, allegedly belonging to the police, obstructed the way of passage for the oncoming passenger train.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, however, said only two persons were injured, adding that the obstructing van did not belong to the police but a property of a company based in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
He also said, “Two people were injured in the accident and are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.
“The traffic gridlock caused by the accident between the train and the Hilux van has been cleared and there is free flow of traffic and people are going about their lawful business
“The command is on top of the situation and we promise to make the state suitable for all to live in.”
