Parents of Lagos pupils in viral video may enjoy tax clearance waiver for enrollment ―Commissioner

The Lagos State government has said the parents of pupils of a school shown in a viral video singing the national anthem inside a flood at Oko-Agbon in Makoko area of the state recently will most likely enjoy tax clearance waiver for enrolment into public schools.

They are also likely to be given free school uniforms and bags by the state government, all to lessen the financial burden their enrolment may cause their parents.

Recall that the state government had last week announced its plan to enrol all the pupils into six government primary schools in the area during this academic term.

Recall also that in Lagos State, to enrol any child into government schools – Primary One, JSS1 and SS1, such pupil must provide tax clearance of any of his/her parents or guardian, and if that is not available must pay a certain sum of money in lieu of that.

But the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, said this particular condition may not applicable to these children as their case, according to her, is circumstantial.

The commissioner told Nigerian Tribune at the weekend on a sideline at the presentation of prizes to 11 students in the state who won awards in the last one year. 

These students include two Vetland Senior Grammar School students who had the best 2020 school-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

According to her, the state Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) is the agency handling the registration of the pupils into the six schools in their area, and because their case is an unusual one, they may be captured under the Zero Project of the agency.

Zero Project, she explained, is that no child that is of school age is expected to be out of school and the agency based on this gives support in a way possible to such children, especially those whose parents are poor.

She said the aim of the state government is to ensure all the children in the video have access to quality education and in a healthy environment.
