Panic in UNILAG as students in hostels contract COVID-19

THERE was fear on Tuesday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, as some students of the institution, who reside in hostels on campus were reportedly confirmed infected with COVID-19. Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university (Academics and Research), Professor Oluwole Familoni, confirmed the development to Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday night but said he would not want to comment further as the University Senate would meet today over the matter after which the management would make its findings and position public. 

The identities of students involved and how they contracted the virus and the hospitals where they were tested positive are yet to be ascertained by Nigerian Tribune as of the time of filing this report around 8.00 p.m. 

It was gathered from some students and members of staff of the university some students residing in about four different halls of residence (name withheld) contracted the virus and had already been asked to go on self isolation at home. 

It was also gathered that the rooms of the affected students in their halls had been put under lock and key by the school authorities while other students and the workers have been asked to continue to comply with COVID-19 guidelines and protocols. 

Meanwhile, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has disclosed that Nigeria will receive 41,282,770 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer-Bio-N Tech and Johnson & Johnson (Jassen) COVID-19 vaccine from the COVAX facility between August and September 2021. Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib stated this at a media briefing on the progress of COVID-19 vaccine exercise on Tuesday in Abuja. 

Shuaib said the agency has received communication for the delivery in shipment of the 3,924,000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca by end of July or early August 2021 from the COVAX facility. He added “3,930,910 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech COVID-19 vaccine in August from the COVAX facility donated by the United States Government and 3,577,860 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech COVID-19 vaccine in Q3 from the COVAX facility.” 

Shuaib further disclosed that additional 29,850,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson (Jassen) COVID-19 vaccine by the end of September will arrive in batches from the African Union Commission. According to Shuaib, “The NPHCDA is putting in place all necessary logistics for storage, distribution, security, and accountability for the range of vaccines we are expecting.
