Lagos State government has said it awaits the recommendations of the six-man Investigative Panel on the collapsed 21- storey Gerrard building in Ikoyi area of the state on what next steps to take on avoiding future occurrence, and whether or not there would be a need to carry out integrity test on the two multi-storey structures still standing on the collapsed building site.
Tribune Online reports that two 15-storey buildings are still standing on the site of the collapsed building, all owned by Fourscores Height Limited belonging to late Femi Osibona.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had, immediately after inaugurating the Panel of Inquiry headed by TPL Toyin Ayinde, visited the site, where he told newsmen that experts would be coming to conduct integrity test on the two 15- storey buildings still standing on the site of the collapsed structure, declaring that nobody knew the structural integrity of the two buildings still standing.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, while speaking with our correspondent on the telephone, said conducting an integrity test on the two buildings still standing cannot be done while evacuation of the rubbles was still ongoing, but quickly added that every step to be taken would be based on the outcome of the panel of inquiry, which has since commenced its sitting.
“They (government) can’t be doing that (integrity test) when the operation is still on. Everything would be based on the recommendations of the panel,” he said.
Meanwhile, the state government has said that a total of 44 bodies had so far been retrieved from the site of the collapsed building, while the rubbles have receded sharply.
This was just as it disclosed on Tuesday that 21 families of victims of the incident had come forward to submit samples for the DNA to identify bodies they wanted to claim, assuring that the bodies would be released to the affected families as from this week once the identification was clear and there were no argument.
