PANDEF commends Speaker Abbas for oversight on Rivers emergency rule

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has received high praise from Ambassador Godknows Igali and the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) for the formation of an Adhoc Oversight Committee to investigate the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of democratic institutions.

In an open letter, Ambassador Igali, who serves as PANDEF’s National Chairman, described the Speaker’s action as “visionary and focused leadership,” stating that it demonstrates a strong commitment to upholding Nigeria’s constitutional values and democratic ethos.

“Your decision to promptly constitute the Adhoc Committee is not only in line with constitutional duty, but it also reflects courage and historical understanding of parliament’s role in nurturing democracy,” Igali wrote.

He particularly lauded the appointment of Professor Julius Ihonvbere as Chairman of the Committee, calling him “a globally respected scholar and principled politician,” and expressed confidence in the rest of the 20-member team.

PANDEF reiterated its opposition to the imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State, arguing that the situation on the ground does not meet the constitutional threshold for such action.

“Not even a fly has been harmed in Rivers State,” Igali noted, emphasising that peace and economic activity have remained largely undisturbed.

The forum also criticised the Administrator’s conduct since his appointment, describing it as a “constitutional aberration” and an affront to Nigeria’s democratic image.

“Specific actions flagged include the dissolution of democratic institutions, appointment of Sole Administrators for local councils, and suspension of ongoing procurement processes.

“The Administrator’s governance pattern raises serious concerns about integrity and fiscal transparency,” the letter stated.

“There is a capable civil service in Rivers State that should serve as the institutional backbone during such transitions.”

Ambassador Igali urged the Committee to recommend steps for the swift restoration of democracy, including the reinstatement of the duly elected governor.

“This mission is of national importance and must be pursued with urgency and neutrality,” he stressed.

The letter concluded with prayers for divine guidance during the Holy Week and beyond.
