P-Square crisis: My conditions for reconciliation —Peter

Take it or drop it, the P-Square brothers have broken up! The news of their infamous break up rocked the entertainment scene for weeks. It turned their fans against one another.

The social media was buzzing for weeks. Many prayed it should never happen. Others feared it was the end of an era for a group that has dominated the music scene industry for two decades, dishing out songs and touring cities in Africa and Europe. Alas! The brothers split!

Oh yes! They made money. How could they have afforded to build a palatial, jaw-dropping home in the heart of Banana Island, Lagos? It is neither a feat for the faint-hearted,  nor for the lily-livered, they had said in one of the interviews they granted when the going was good.

They had since gone their separate ways to pursue solo careers but it remains to be seen if they would be able to repeat the feat that literally gave them the heart of almost every Nigerian girl. That was P-Square for you.

Well, the new twist to the feud is that the door of reconciliation may not have been totally shut, going by the words of Peter in a recent interview he granted Vibe.ng Magazine in its October issue.

According to Peter, problem started for the group in 2013, even as he pointed out that 30 children cannot play together for 30 years and blamed their break up on lack of respect for each other.

“We are at a point where we no longer have respect for each other. It is not ego or pride; it’s respect… respect as an individual, and as family. This is the best solution we could come to.”

If there is one thing Peter feels sorry about, it is the fate of their fans, who are sharply divided. Mr P, as he loves to be called now, feels sad about the development but it is a decision that they had to make for the sake of peace. Apart from that, the revelation from Peter revealed that they had to belly their issues to satisfy their fans many times, even when they had to perform on stage

It could not have been prevented as he maintained the fans would not like to see P-Square perform on stage when they had just fought back stage. We had managed to please you guys when we were not happy. I’ve tried many times to make it work but it did not work… I just had to give up for the sake of the respect of our individual families. We gave you guys P-Square even though the family had been fighting for about four years-even as of last year that we claimed we were back,” he added. “He, too, isn’t sure what exactly is wrong. But whatever it is, it isn’t healthy.

Peter confessed: “We are not okay. It’s not healthy. I don’t have any problem with their own family. The wives, everybody. I am cool with them. I don’t know what’s wrong. I don’t know why it looks as if the hatred is on my family. I’ve tried to ask them what the problem is but nobody is telling me anything. It’s like saying, Mr Charles and Mr James are business partners and they own a beverage factory together. Mr Charles and his partner work together, but Mr Charles doesn’t like his partner’s family. All the time, he insults the family. All the time, he says s*** about the family. All the time he doesn’t attend the family’s functions. Do you expect two of them to still be working together? Be honest with yourself.”

On whether it is possible for a reconciliation that would see them mount the stage together as P-Square, Peter stated the conditions unequivocally; “When the respect is back; When you stay apart for a while, the respect will come.  We’ve lost it.

“People will never understand but we’ve lost that respect. Like I said in the open letter, we will work in future, but when we come back, it will be from respect. There was no respect, that’s why there has been a back and forth. Aren’t you guys tired of it? If I tell you that P-Square is back now, people will say You guys are tricking us. Don’t play with people’s minds.

“I don’t have any problem. All I said is that, have it at the back of your minds – P-Square is for the fans. Peter, Paul. Jude and family, is family.”
