Ozubulu community celebrates New Yam Festival

OZUBULU Community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State has celebrated it New Yam Festival in grand style.

The Iwaji festival which took place at the Palace of Igwe Nnamdi Oruche attracted illustrious sons and daughters of Ozubulu both at home and diaspora, traditional rulers as well as government officials.

Showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ndi Igbo, Igwe Oruche noted that Iwaji offers communities opportunity for a reunion and encouraged Ndi Igbo to consolidate their culture.

Expressing his delight over the ceremony, Igwe Oruche underscored the relevance of culture in people’s life stating that new yam celebration marks the period of harvesting and provides a forum for community development projects and social events.

In his address, the President General of the town, Chief Peter Uzokwe, beckoned on Ozubulu indigenes to bring home branches of their investments to the community in order to create job opportunities for youths and graduates of the town.

While describing yam as the most sacred seedling that is regarded as a taboo when stolen, Chief Uzokwe, commended their traditional ruler for his exemplary leadership in the town, positing that the emergence of Igwe Oruche has created a robust development.

Speaking to TribuneOnline in an interview, the Managing Director of Anambra State Signage and Advertising Agency, Mr. Jude Emecheta, who said that yam is celebrated because of its speciality among all crops, called for the sustainability of the age-long culture that has kept the Igbo identity intact and distinguished Ndi Igbo as people that cherish their heritage.
